Please note that the course is only available to those already in contact with our service and living within the Swindon area.

With our Carers’ Course we aim to:

  • inform and educate carers about the disease process
  • raise awareness of the services available
  • assist carers in the development of techniques to manage the symptoms of the disease

Topics covered by the course include:

    • What is dementia?
    • Services available
    • Benefits available
    • Legal matters
    • Care for carers
    • Problem solving
    • Practical solutions
    • Relaxation techniques

The course recognises the importance of carers. As well as practical information and care strategies, it offers an opportunity to explore issues and share experiences with others in similar circumstances

Who is it for?

The course is for carers of people who have recently received a diagnosis of dementia.

What is involved?

The course, which runs twice a year, usually starting in the late Spring and Autumn, is made up of nine two-hour sessions, which take place in the Carers' Room at Kingshill Research Centre.

How much does it cost?

Nothing! The course is free. We can also arrange a taxi for you or reimburse your travel costs.

What about the person I care for?

A sitting service is provided, as required, by carers' organisation FOCUS, the local Princess Royal Trust for Carers, either in the Kingshill Library or in the Day Hospital downstairs.

When the course ends . . .

When we reached the end of our first course, the group didn't want to stop meeting! As a result, we run what we call a "reunion group" every six weeks or so, to which participants of completed courses are invited. Further topics can be addressed as they arise in the context of an informal support network.
